By Brian Murphy,ReutersThe U.S. Department of Education’s website lists the schools with the most financial profit in three years, according to the latest numbers released by the Education Department.
The top 10 schools were all in the public education sector, including for-profit universities such as Florida International University, Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania, which are among the top public universities in the country.
The U.K., with its public schools, had the second highest financial profit, at $2.2 billion.
The list includes a broad range of institutions including public universities, private universities, for-profits and state universities, and is broken down by region and year.
The most profitable schools for the first three years were the University at Buffalo and Cornell University in New York, according the DOE website.
The Buffalo, N.Y., school, founded in 1882, has earned $5.7 billion since 2009, and its $6.7 million profit in the first year was more than twice that of any other school in the nation, the DOE said.
The Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Science, founded by Paul Wertheimer in 1919, has been ranked No. 2 on the DOE’s list of the most valuable private universities in recent years.
In 2017, the Buffalo School earned $1.3 billion in profit.
